Why I Started Baseline: Fueling Young Athletes for a Healthier Tomorrow

Picture this: It’s a sweltering Saturday afternoon, and your kid just wrapped up a grueling soccer match. Another game starts in 2 hours. Sweaty, exhausted, and downright hangry, they grab the first snack in sight—often something sugary, salty, or devoid of real nutrition. Sound familiar?

As a youth basketball coach and trainer for the last 10 years, I've been watching young athletes give their all on the field, court or diamond, only to refuel with outdated, subpar snacks that do little to support their growing bodies or athletic goals. Every time I saw another bag of potato chips get handed out at halftime, my heart sank. I knew there had to be a better way.

The Problem: Outdated Nutrition for Modern Athletes

Youth sports have evolved tremendously over the years—kids are training harder, playing longer seasons, and juggling multiple activities at once. Yet, somehow, the typical post-game snack lineup remains stuck in the past. We’re talking sugar-laden sports drinks, processed cookies, or candy bars that provide a quick rush but leave young athletes crashing hard soon after.

Why is this a big deal?

  • Growing Bodies Need Quality Fuel: Kids aren’t just playing sports; they’re in a critical stage of development. When they don’t get the nutrients they need, both their performance and long-term health can suffer.
  • Lack of Awareness: Many parents and coaches simply haven’t been given the right tools or information about healthier alternatives. It’s not about blaming anyone; it’s about filling the knowledge gap.
  • One-Size-Fits-All Doesn’t Work: Every young athlete is different. Some need more protein, some need more complex carbs, and nearly all need better hydration. Standard junk food doesn’t cut it for those unique needs.

My Lightbulb Moment

I was sitting on the bench just before practice started, looked down at my team and saw what they were eating, an Uncrustable, a Clif bar (they're not hiking, climbing or biking around a mountain), chips and other sugary snacks. It struck me: What if there was a snack made specifically for young athletes? Something that respects their taste buds but also delivers real, balanced nutrition.

That idea sparked Baseline.

Enter Baseline: Building a Better Snack for Young Athletes

What makes Baseline different? It’s not just about slapping a label on a “healthier” product and calling it a day. It’s about combining expert-backed nutrition with flavors kids actually want. We worked with nutritionists, coaches, and—most importantly—families to create snacks that strike the perfect balance between taste, convenience, and substance.

  1. Kid-Approved Flavors: No one’s going to reach for a snack that tastes like cardboard. We tested flavors with real kids to ensure Baseline snacks are something they’ll be excited to eat.
  2. Functional Ingredients: Each product is formulated to deliver steady energy, support muscle recovery, and provide essential nutrients—without the sugar crash.
  3. Education First: We believe in empowering families with knowledge. Our monthly newsletter, The Winning Bite, goes beyond snacks, offering tips for mealtime, hydration, rest, and more.

The Bigger Picture: Empowering Families Everywhere

Starting Baseline was never just about selling snacks. It’s about reshaping the conversation around youth sports nutrition. Kids deserve better fuel, and parents deserve simple, trustworthy snacks. By sharing our journey every step of the way, we hope to spark a collective shift—one where families feel confident in the choices they make for their young champions.
