In basketball, the baseline is the boundary every play is built around. It's also what every athlete deserves before they compete — a real nutritional foundation, not an afterthought.
I've been coaching competitive basketball for over a decade. At every level — AAU, travel, varsity — I watch the same thing play out before games. Kids showing up on empty. Eating chips in the car. Grabbing something from a vending machine twenty minutes before tipoff.
By the fourth quarter, the ones who didn't eat right are running on fumes. Their legs are heavy. Their decisions slow down. You can see it from the sideline. And as a coach, you know it had nothing to do with effort or talent.
They worked all week for that game. They just didn't fuel it.
The problem isn't laziness — it's options. The window between school and tipoff is short, and almost everything in that window is wrong for a competitive 13–18 year old. Too heavy. Too processed. Built for adult bodybuilders. Loaded with stimulants no teenager should be putting in their body.
After years of watching this cost athletes performances they'd earned in the gym, I started asking a simpler question: what does a youth athlete actually need in the 90 minutes before a game? Clean, fast carbohydrates. The right electrolytes. Nothing that doesn't belong.
That question is where Baseline started. The bar is the answer.
